Nestled along the Adriatic coast in the comune of Melendugno, Torre dell'Orso unfolds as a crescent of golden sand cradled between towering white cliffs and dense pine forests. The turquoise water is so clear you can watch schools of fish darting around your ankles, and the bay's sheltered position makes it one of the finest swimming spots on the eastern shore of Puglia.
The Drama of White Stone and Azure Water
The beach takes its name from the ancient watchtower perched on the southern headland, built centuries ago to watch for Saracen raiders. But today the real drama comes from the twin sea stacks rising from the water just offshore—locals call them Le Due Sorelle, the Two Sisters, and legend says they're two women turned to stone as they gazed out to sea.
The cliffs themselves glow almost white in the midday sun, a testament to the limestone geology that defines this stretch of coast. Erosion has carved caves and grottos into the rock face, and at certain times of day the light turns the water an almost unreal shade of electric turquoise.
Where Pine Shade Meets Perfect Swimming
Behind the beach, a thick belt of pineta offers merciful shade during the hottest hours. Families spread blankets under the trees, and the scent of sun-warmed pine resin mingles with salt air. The seabed slopes gently, making it safe for children and confident enough for strong swimmers to strike out toward the stacks.
The water stays relatively calm thanks to the bay's natural amphitheater shape. Even when the tramontana blows hard farther up the coast, Torre dell'Orso often remains glassy and swimmable.
What to Bring and When to Come
- Arrive before 10 AM in July and August to claim a good spot—the beach fills quickly on weekends
- Bring reef shoes if you plan to explore the rocky areas at either end of the bay
- Pack plenty of water and snacks; the nearest cafés and lidi are a short walk back toward the parking area
- Snorkeling gear rewards you with views of sea urchins, starfish, and small octopuses in the rocks
- Late afternoon light is magical for photography, especially when the cliffs glow amber
Exploring Beyond the Bay
Torre dell'Orso sits within easy reach of some of the Adriatic's most beautiful coastal spots. Just a few kilometers south, the sea caves of Grotta della Poesia offer a stunning natural swimming pool carved into the rock. Heading north, the fishing village of San Foca provides a quieter alternative and excellent seafood trattorias where the catch comes straight off the morning boats.
Melendugno itself is worth a wander for its Baroque architecture and the sense of everyday Puglian life away from the beach crowds. The drive inland toward Lecce—just twenty minutes west—takes you through ancient olive groves and past whitewashed masserie that have stood for centuries.
