Spiaggetta del Molo: A Family Beach in Otranto

Tucked beneath the ancient walls of Otranto's historic port, Spiaggetta del Molo—affectionately known as Spiaggia dei Bambini—is a quiet crescent of sand where the Adriatic laps gently against the shore. This sheltered public beach is a favorite among locals who know that its shallow, calm waters create an ideal playground for the youngest beachgoers. Unlike the more exposed stretches of coastline north and south of town, this little cove is protected by the harbor jetty, turning even breezy days into serene seaside afternoons.

Where the Harbor Meets the Sea

The beach sits in a unique position, cradled between Otranto's working port and the crystalline Adriatic. You'll notice fishing boats bobbing at anchor just beyond the breakwater, and the scent of salt and seaweed mingles with the aroma of grilled fish wafting from nearby trattorie. The juxtaposition of maritime life and beach leisure gives the spot an authentic, lived-in feel that's increasingly rare along heavily touristed coastlines.

Because it faces east, mornings here are particularly magical—sunlight streams across the water, illuminating the sandy bottom in shades of amber and jade. By mid-afternoon, the harbor wall casts welcome shade over part of the beach, offering natural relief from the summer heat.

Gentle Waters, Big Smiles

What sets Spiaggia dei Bambini apart is the remarkably shallow entry into the sea. You can wade out ten, even fifteen meters and still be knee-deep, making it a stress-free environment for toddlers and non-swimmers. Parents often spread their towels right at the water's edge, close enough to keep a watchful eye while little ones splash and build sandcastles in the gentle surf.

The sand is fine and soft, though small pebbles appear closer to the waterline—water shoes are handy but not essential. The seabed is largely free of rocks and urchins, another reason families gravitate here.

What to Bring and When to Go

  • Umbrella and sun protection — there's limited natural shade, especially during peak summer hours
  • Snorkeling gear for older kids — the rocks along the jetty host small fish and crabs
  • Water shoes — optional, but appreciated on pebbly patches near the harbor
  • Arrive early in July and August — the beach is small and fills up quickly on weekends
  • Visit in late afternoon — the western wall provides shade, and the light is stunning for photos

Beyond the Beach: Otranto at Your Doorstep

One of the joys of Spiaggetta del Molo is its proximity to Otranto's historic center. A five-minute stroll brings you to the centro storico, where cobbled lanes wind past the cathedral with its astonishing mosaic floor, Byzantine churches, and the imposing Aragonese Castle. After a morning swim, you can wander into a shaded piazza for an aperitivo or sample pasticciotto at one of the town's legendary bakeries.

To the north, the coast opens up into dramatic cliffs and sea caves—Grotta della Poesia and the Faraglioni di Sant'Andrea are both within a short drive. To the south, the wild beauty of Porto Badisco and the Punta Palascìa lighthouse (Italy's easternmost point) await. The beach works beautifully as a calm anchor point in a day of coastal exploration.
