Spiaggia Due Sorelle: Melendugno's Hidden Gem

Along the Adriatic coast near Melendugno, a pair of dramatic limestone towers rise from the sea like ancient guardians, giving Spiaggia Due Sorelle its evocative name. This free-access sandy beach offers one of the most photogenic settings on the eastern Puglian shoreline, where the interplay of rock, sand, and impossibly clear water creates a scene that feels almost mythical.

The Twin Sentinels and Their Story

The two distinctive cliffs that frame the cove aren't just a pretty backdrop—they're sculpted remnants of ancient seabeds, weathered over millennia into these striking pillars. Local legend whispers of two sisters turned to stone, forever watching over the bay. Whether you believe the folklore or prefer geology, the formations create natural shelter from winds and add a dramatic verticality to an otherwise gentle beach.

At different times of day, the light plays across the pale stone in shifting hues—golden at sunrise, bone-white at noon, rose-tinged as the sun dips westward. Photographers and Instagrammers stake out spots on the sand well before sunset to capture the cliffs silhouetted against the changing sky.

Crystal Waters and the Underwater Landscape

What makes Due Sorelle truly special is what lies beneath the surface. The crystal-clear turquoise water offers visibility of several meters, revealing a seabed dotted with smooth stones, patches of posidonia seagrass, and small fish darting between submerged rocks. Snorkelers find rich hunting along the base of the cliffs, where the underwater topography becomes more complex and marine life more abundant.

The sandy bottom slopes gently, making entry easy for swimmers of all levels. On calm days—typical in high summer—the sea takes on an almost tropical stillness, its surface a mirror reflecting the cliffs and sky.

What to Bring and When to Go

Because this is a free-access beach without organized lidi, you'll need to pack your own essentials. Shade is limited to the narrow strips cast by the cliffs, so an umbrella is wise in July and August. The beach can get busy on weekends and in peak season, but weekday mornings—especially in June or September—often reward visitors with near-solitude.

  • Snorkeling gear to explore the rocky areas at the cliff bases
  • Water shoes if you plan to venture over the stony patches
  • Sun protection—umbrella, hat, and high-SPF sunscreen
  • A waterproof camera or phone case for underwater shots
  • Plenty of drinking water and snacks, as facilities are minimal

Beyond the Beach: Exploring Melendugno's Coast

The coastline around Melendugno is a tapestry of coves and cliffs worth exploring beyond Due Sorelle. Just a few kilometers north lies the famous beach of Torre dell'Orso, with its own iconic sea stacks and a broader arc of sand. To the south, the coast becomes rockier and more dramatic, punctuated by hidden inlets accessible by foot or kayak. The town of Melendugno itself, a short drive inland, offers authentic restaurants and a glimpse of everyday Puglian life away from the tourist trail—a perfect complement to a day spent on the shore.
