Spiaggia della Libertà: Bisceglie's Sandy Escape

Along the Adriatic coastline of Bisceglie, Spiaggia della Libertà unfolds as a welcoming public stretch of sand where the rhythms of the sea take centre stage. This free-access beach draws both locals and visitors seeking a genuine slice of Puglian coastal life, far from the polished veneer of resort complexes. The name itself—Spiaggia della Libertà—captures the spirit: liberty to lay your towel where you like, swim when the mood strikes, and linger as long as the sun allows.

The Feel of the Shore

Soft golden sand meets the gentle lap of Adriatic waves, creating a shoreline that's as kind to families with toddlers as it is to solo travellers craving a quiet swim. The beach is wide enough to find your own pocket of space, even on busy summer weekends. Because it's a public beach, you'll see a genuine cross-section of Bisceglie life—grandmothers under umbrellas, teenagers playing beach volleyball, fishermen casting lines from the rocks at the edges.

The water is typically calm and crystal-clear, with a gradual slope that makes it safe for children and inviting for a long, lazy float. On mornings when the Adriatic is glassy, you can see straight down to the sandy bottom.

What to Bring and When to Go

Because Spiaggia della Libertà is a free beach, there are no sunbeds or umbrellas provided—pack your own. Locals arrive early in July and August to claim shaded spots near the dunes or any natural windbreaks. If you're visiting in June or September, you'll have far more breathing room and the water is still beautifully warm.

  • Bring your own umbrella, towels, and snacks—there are small bars and cafés within walking distance, but on-beach services are minimal
  • Arrive before 10 a.m. in high season to secure a good spot near the water
  • Wear water shoes if you plan to explore the rocky outcrops at either end of the beach—perfect for snorkelling
  • Check the wind forecast: on breezy days, the northern end of the beach offers better shelter
  • Combine your visit with a stroll through Bisceglie's centro storico, just a short walk inland, where pale stone lanes and Romanesque churches tell centuries of maritime history

Beyond the Beach

Bisceglie's old harbour and seafront promenade are a five-minute walk from Spiaggia della Libertà, lined with gelaterie and seafood restaurants that come alive at sunset. If you're staying for the evening, the lungomare fills with families, joggers, and couples out for passeggiata. Further afield, the Dolmen della Chianca—a 5,000-year-old megalithic tomb—sits just outside town, offering a striking archaeological detour.

The beach is also an easy base for exploring the wider coast: Trani's cathedral port is fifteen minutes south, while the olive groves and rocky coves of the northern Adriatic stretch invitingly beyond.
