Spiaggia dei Cento Scalini in San Menaio

Nestled along the rugged coastline of San Menaio on the Gargano promontory, Spiaggia dei Cento Scalini—known locally as Spiaggia delle Tufare—offers one of Puglia's most photogenic stretches of sand. The name hints at the journey down: a winding staircase carved through the cliff face that delivers you to a crescent of golden sand framed by towering tufa formations. The descent is part of the charm, with each step revealing a wider glimpse of the turquoise Adriatic.

Where Earth Meets Sea in Layers of Stone

The beach's defining feature is the striped tufa cliffs that rise dramatically from the sand, their layers of honey, ochre, and cream telling millennia of geological history. These soft stone formations have been sculpted by wind and waves into unexpected curves and hollows, creating natural shade pockets and a stunning backdrop for swimmers. At low tide, shallow pools form among the rocks, perfect for curious explorers.

The contrast between the warm tones of the tufa and the brilliant blue of the Adriatic is especially striking in the early morning light, when the beach is still quiet and the stone glows in the slanting sun. Photographers and painters have long been drawn to this interplay of color and form.

Swimming Between Sky and Stone

The water here is remarkably clear, with a sandy seabed that slopes gently into deeper turquoise. On calm days, the sea takes on an almost Caribbean hue, inviting long swims parallel to the cliffs. Snorkelers will find small fish darting among the rocks near the shoreline, though the real draw is simply the crystalline visibility and the sense of swimming in a natural amphitheater.

  • Arrive early in July and August to claim a spot before the midday rush
  • Bring water shoes if you plan to explore the rockier sections at either end
  • Pack a picnic—there are no beach clubs here, just nature and open sky
  • Time your visit for late afternoon when the light softens and the crowds thin
  • Combine with a walk through San Menaio's pine-shaded seafront promenade

A Shoreline Worth Wandering

Beyond the main beach, the coastline stretches north and south in a series of smaller coves and rock platforms. Low-season visitors often have entire pockets of sand to themselves, with only the sound of waves and the occasional fisherman casting from the rocks. The dramatic cliffs continue along much of this coast, creating a landscape that feels both intimate and expansive.

San Menaio itself is a low-key seaside town, caught between the forest of the Foresta Umbra inland and the endless blue ahead. After a day on the sand, the town's modest trattorias serve up fresh seafood and local wines, the perfect end to a sun-soaked afternoon on one of the Gargano's most distinctive beaches.
