In the heart of the Grecia Salentina, the small village of Martignano becomes the stage for one of southern Italy's most celebrated musical traditions. La Notte della Taranta brings its itinerant festival Le vie del Mediterraneo to this Grecanic enclave, transforming the stone-paved streets into an open-air celebration of pizzica, tarantella, and Mediterranean fusion sounds.

Where Ancient Greece Meets the Beat of the Tambourine

Martignano is one of the last villages where the Griko dialect—a living descendant of ancient Greek—is still spoken. When the festival arrives, this linguistic heritage merges with the hypnotic rhythms of traditional pizzica, creating a soundscape unlike anywhere else. The accordion, violin, and tamburello echo through narrow alleys where old women still greet each other in a language older than Italian itself.

The festival's Le vie del Mediterraneo theme weaves together the musical threads of Puglia, Greece, Albania, and North Africa. You'll hear everything from frenzied tarantella circles to haunting vocal improvisations that could have sailed across the Adriatic centuries ago.

Dancing Under the Stars in a Village Frozen in Time

Unlike the massive August finale in Melpignano, this itinerant stop offers an intimate, authentic encounter with the tradition. There's no formal stage barrier—musicians walk among the crowd, and it's common to see grandmothers teaching tourists the proper footwork for the pizzica. The village square becomes a spontaneous dance floor as night falls and the music intensifies.

  • Bring comfortable shoes—cobblestones and dancing go hand in hand
  • Local families often set up impromptu food stands selling pittule (fried dough) and local wine
  • The best viewing spots are near the Chiesa Matrice, where acoustics amplify the tambourines
  • Arrive early to explore the village's Byzantine frescoes and Griko inscriptions
  • The crowd is a beautiful mix of locals, Italian tourists, and curious international visitors—everyone dances together

What to Explore While the Sun Is Still High

Come to Martignano a few hours early. The village is tiny but rich: visit the ethnographic museum dedicated to Griko culture, or sit in a café and listen to elderly residents chatting in their ancient tongue. Just seven kilometers north lies Calimera, another Grecanic village with stunning murals and artisan workshops.

If you're making a day of it, the Adriatic coast at San Foca is a fifteen-minute drive—perfect for a late afternoon swim before returning inland for the evening's music. The festival typically starts at sunset, and the energy builds as darkness falls and the primal pulse of the pizzica takes over the village.
