Beneath the sunbaked plains of Puglia, just a short drive from the Adriatic coast and the heart of Salento, lies a hidden world that took nature 90 million years to sculpt. The Grotte di Castellana in Castellana Grotte is one of Italy's most spectacular cave systems, stretching over 3 kilometers into the earth and revealing chambers adorned with stalactites, stalagmites, and crystalline formations that seem plucked from a dream.
The Experience
Your descent begins through a dramatic vertical opening known as the Grave, a 60-meter-deep karst sinkhole that floods with natural light and serves as the gateway to the underworld. The temperature drops immediately to a constant 16–18°C, a welcome relief on scorching summer days. As you walk deeper, guided by expert speleologi, each chamber reveals new wonders: the White Cave, whose alabaster walls shimmer like fresh snow, and the Cave of the Precipice, where formations seem frozen mid-drip.
You can choose between two tours. The short tour covers about 1 kilometer in roughly 50 minutes, perfect for families with young children or those short on time. The full tour plunges 3 kilometers deep over two hours, culminating in the breathtaking White Cave—considered one of the most beautiful caverns in the world.
What Makes It Special
What sets the Grotte di Castellana apart is the sheer variety and preservation of its geological features. Unlike many commercialized caves, these remain largely in their natural state, protected since their modern discovery in 1938 by speleologist Franco Anelli. The formations take on fantastical shapes—stone curtains, columns, and flowstone waterfalls—all illuminated by carefully placed lighting that enhances but never overwhelms.
- Pristine formations spanning millions of years of geological activity
- Dramatic temperature shift offering natural air conditioning year-round
- Expert multilingual guides who bring the science and legend to life
- Underground lakes and pools reflecting light in otherworldly ways
- The White Cave finale on the full tour, a chamber of pure calcite crystals
Who It's For
This is an experience for curious minds and lovers of natural beauty. Families with children aged five and up will find the short tour manageable, while adventure seekers and geology enthusiasts should absolutely opt for the full route. The paths are paved and well-maintained, though there are stairs and some uneven sections, so moderate mobility is needed.
Insider Tips
Bring a light jacket or sweater—the cave stays cool even in August. Wear comfortable walking shoes with good grip. Photography is allowed, but flash can damage delicate formations, so check with your guide. Arrive early in summer to avoid tour groups, and consider pairing your visit with a stroll through the charming historic center of Castellana Grotte above ground.
